From our doctor:
“The purpose of the plastic surgeon should be to create a natural nose structure that is away from exaggeration and befitting a person's face with all excesses corrected. It is should not be forgotten that the true success is to create the best suitable nose out of your own skin, cartilage tissue, bone structure and quality. Therefore the success of the surgery depends on structuring expectations and dreams of the prospective patients on solid ground.”
People who has visual discomfort with their nose structure and/or experiencing breathing/respiratory problems and people who wish for a better psychological and physiological quality of life are suitable candidates for this surgery. This surgery is not recommended for patients under 18 years of age, except in rare cases. However, it should also be considered that in 45 – 50 years of age, it may be difficult to get satisfactory results from this surgery.
After analysis of medical history and physical examination, including the shape of the nose, skin structure, its relationship with the surrounding tissue, preventing breathing disorders; the surgical road map is drawn. Nose shape of the patient is computerized using photos and the new shape of the nose can be drawn and planned with the patient. The final image accuracy is generally high but slight differences should also be considered. The anesthesiologist checks any obstacles before the operation and necessary blood tests are done before the surgery. In case of chronic diseases that may affect the operation, there may be additional tests or consultations. If you use any blood-thinning medication it should be discontinued at least 1 week in advance the operation. Smoking can impair wound healing in some patients. There is no need to stop using drugs necessary for other chronic diseases.
Rhinoplasty surgery is performed under general anesthesia in a hospital setting. Although procedure length depends on the degree of difficulty of the nose, in average it takes about 1.5-2 hours. There are two main techniques, including indoor and outdoor. The main difference between the two techniques is the 0.5cm long incision. At the end of the operation a plaster is placed on the nose. Except in rare cases, there is no need for inserting buffers into the nose.
In the 4th post-operative hour, food intake starts and the patient gets off bed to start walking. After the operation, ice is applied to reduce swelling and edema around the nose. Swelling and bruising around the eyes is probably the most irritating problems which may not occur in all patients. Bruise and swelling often occurs in patients who had previous nose surgery or who has large deformations or in cases where hard bone structure is improved.. However, the swelling and bruises go away generally within 48-72 hours. Patients are discharged on the same day. The patient returns to daily life in the same week; one week later the plaster is removed and bandages are taken. Since there is no buffer placed inside the nose, patients may breathe easy within the first few days. 3 months later the swelling decreases 80%, but the actual appearance of the nose is achieved after 6 months. Therefore, the nose should be protected against any impact in the first 6 months, and use of glasses must be avoided.
Temporary problems: loss of sensation, tenderness, pain.
Short-term problems: bleeding, infection, delayed wound healing.
Long-term problems: difficulty breathing and aesthetic problems (asymmetry in the nose, crash, etc.)
Rhinoplasty and Permanency
Rhinoplasty surgery is permanent. On the 6th month, your nose takes its final shape and it is permanent. However, the tissue around the nose gets affected by the aging process, like all other body tissues.
