From our doctor:
“Female pattern breast formation in men is called gynecomastia. Gynecomastia is caused by hormonal disorders, drugs and some syndromes or it may also physiologically develop without any underlying disease. Contrary to the psychological burden of fear and feeling ashamed, gynecomastia surgery is a very comfortable operation with promising fast results.”
Patient Profile
Gynecomastia procedure can be done in all the men who develop female type breast tissue for any reasons. However, in men under 18 years of age, it is appropriate to wait for the completion of the development, except in rare cases. The presence of regression characteristic of gynecomastia should be considered after adolescence.
The patient must first be evaluated by a specialist in endocrinology. The underlying problem, likely to be a hormonal disorder that can be corrected with medication should be investigated. This is a non-surgical treatment for patients. After analysis of medical history and physical examination, the technical operation criteria are evaluated to determine the operation method including the breast size, length and skin quality. The techniques that can be used for surgical gynecomastia are explained to you by your surgeon. The anesthesiologist checks any obstacles before the operation and necessary blood tests are done before the surgery. In case of chronic diseases that may affect the operation, other additional tests or consultations may be necessary. If you use any blood-thinning medication it should be discontinued at least 1 week in advance the operation. Smoking can impair wound healing in some patients. There is no need to stop using drugs necessary for other chronic diseases.
Surgery Process
Gynecomastia surgery is done under general anesthesia in a hospital setting. The average operative time is about 1 hour. In the majority of patients, liposuction procedure is also performed. VAZER liposuction technique is used in larger breasts. There is no scar mark left in all these technical procedures. In rare cases, the skin is much too large and liposuction is inefficient. Therefore surgical techniques are used, a vertical scar and a mark around the nipple will remain after surgical procedures.
In the 4th post-operative hour, food intake starts and the patient gets off bed to start walking. There may be a slight pain due to tightness in his face. The pain is most usually less then what is expected and pain relievers can be used to provide adequate assistance. Patients are discharged on the same day or the next day. Patients can take a shower after 1 or 2 days. Some level of edema and swelling can occur in the chest and it passes completely in about 3 weeks. Patients can return to daily life in the same week. Breast corsets are worn for 2-3 weeks after the surgery. Mild exercise can easily be done after the operation. The breasts take their final shape at the end of the third month.
