From our doctor:
"Lack of confidence and fear of being mocked is inevitable in people with protruding ears. This problem, particularly in pre-school aged children, can lead to personal development and social integration problems that cannot be reversed. Today, with otoplasty surgery, these problems are treated quickly and effectively."
Ear development in humans is almost completed about 5 years of age. Therefore otoplasty surgery is not suitable for persons under the age of 5. This surgery especially in preschool children is more effective psychologically.
After analysis of medical history and physical examination, the shape and extent of the disorder of the ear are evaluated and surgery-related road map is drawn. The anesthesiologist checks any obstacles before the operation and necessary blood tests are done before the surgery. In case of chronic diseases that may affect the operation, other additional tests or consultations may be necessary. If you use any blood-thinning medication it should be discontinued at least 1 week in advance the operation. Smoking can impair wound healing in some patients. There is no need to stop using drugs necessary for other chronic diseases.
Otoplasty surgery is done in a hospital setting. For children general anesthesia, for adults sedation and local anesthesia is often preferred. The average operation time is 1 hour. During the surgery, the incision is made behind the ear. The and of the ear is changed and this will not get affected by growth in children. At the end of the operation, a pressure bandage is applied over the ears.
In the 4th post-operative hour, food intake starts and the patient gets off bed to start walking. Patients are discharged on the same day. Generally there is no pain after the surgery. The bandage is removed on day 2. For 2 weeks, the patient uses a sports bandana covering the ears.
Temporary problems: tenderness, pain.
Short-term problems: bleeding, infection, delayed wound healing.
Long-term problems: aesthetic problems (asymmetries, mergers, sewing reactions).
Otoplasty and Permanency:
Proper surgical technique and regular use of bandages after surgery reduce this risk significantly.
